Crowley Cheese
Healdville, VT
Crowley Cheese has been a favorite among generations of cheese-lovers for more than 185 years. The Crowley’s started making cheese in 1824 and built the present-day factory in 1882, which is now designated a “National Historic Place.” Bottom line: they are the country’s oldest continuously operating cheese factory and folks drop by here all the time asking for directions to the factory which is about a 45 drive from here.
Crowley Cheese is a semi-firm, all natural, raw milk, aged cheese, which has been handcrafted in the Green Mountains of Vermont since 1824. Though it appears similar to a Vermont Cheddar, it’s different – both in taste and texture--mainly due to its rinsed curd process and high moisture content, which makes it sweeter and creamier. As a raw milk cheese, Crowley is very flavorful and distinctive: with a buttery flavor when young; developing an interesting earthy complexity as it ages.
