Of all the producers I met on my trip to Italy, Leonardo Lelli impressed me as one of the most passionate about his craft.  He, his wife Leeza and his brother-in-law are the entire coffee roasting company, involved in every step of the process from visiting coffee growers through roasting the beans, packaging and marketing them.

All of the beans Torrefazione Caffe Lelli buys are organic and hand-picked by growers Leonardo has chosen for their dedication to quality and careful land management.  Beyond fair-trade practices, he also pays his growers incentive bonuses for superior product. 

Roasted slowly over relatively low temperatures with forced hot air instead of flames, the fresh green coffee beans are toasted rather than scorched, allowing all of the flavor nuances to shine through.  When tasting the Sinfonia blend brewed into espresso I was struck by the range of aromatics I could detect, including smooth molasses, and sweet and tart black currants.  It reminded me of tasting wine—I was amazed to learn that coffee could be so complex and so nuanced.  Very special!

The coffee comes very finely ground in sealed bags.
