La Salamandra Dulce de Leche
Dulce de Leche is everywhere now. So what is it and what makes this one so special?
It has been called milk jam, milk candy and sweet milk. It is predominantly found in South American countries but there is reference to it being made in Normandy, France as far back as the 14th century. Whatever the origin, this carmelized milk and sugar is akin to the smoothest butterscotch or mouthwatering caramel and may be spooned over ice cream or cake, spread on toast or biscuits or spooned right out of the jar standing with the refrigerator door open. Remember, when no one's watching there are no rules.
La Salamandra brand Dulce de Leche is produced on a farm in Argentina outside of Buenos Aires. The milk from the cows goes directly to the dulceria located at the farm. The farm produces no butter, so the milk contains 100% of the butterfat! No surprise that La Salmandra produces the finest, full flavored Dulce de Leche and that it received the Gold Product Award for Outstanding Jam, Spread, Preserve, or Sweet Topping at the New York Fancy Food Show.
One funny note. When Amelia and her Husband Hector got married a few years ago, they had to design a cake that Hector would eat, as he hates buttercream frosting. So they ended up not frosting it at all—just layering it with thick slathers of dulce de leche. It was divine!
