Nitty Gritty Grain Company Organic Wheat Berries
You don’t normally think “waves of grain” here in Vermont. Corn and cows of course. But wheat?
The folks at Nitty Gritty are changing that—and quickly. Wheat berries are fast becoming the chic grain—we now make several cold deli salads and our customers love them. You’ll find some of the top Vermont restaurants and caterers using wheat berries in their offerings too. Nutty, crunchy and so good for you it’s no wonder. Simply soak and boil and you’ve got a grain that’s great to toss with peppers, scallions, olive oil or dried fruit. Here are some great recipes straight from the Nitty Gritty kitchen: Basin Harbor Club Sunday Evening Farm Dinner's Wheat Berry Salad, Lana’s Perfect Wheat Berry Salad.
Nitty Gritty is a testament to how everyone should do it. At their farm along Lake Champlain in Charlotte, VT, their aim is to participate in the cycle of sustainability both nutritionally and environmentally by growing certified organic grains. But they do more…their packaging is made from non-petroleum cellophane and is compostable and re-closable. The label is printed on recycled paper with soy ink. Pretty cool stuff.
