My wife grew up in eastern Pennsylvania about a half hour from the Unique pretzel factory in Reading, PA. In fact, her family used to travel to Reading for church on Sunday mornings. Her family has known about Unique pretzels for years and turned me on to them some twenty years ago. Whenever we traveled to Pennsylvania we always tried to remember to pick up enough to last until the next time. It was my pleasure to introduce these pretzels to our "family" of foods here at Woodstock Farmers' Market. We really think these are the best pretzels we have ever tasted; crunchy, great flavor, many varieties to accommodate many different tastes. My favorite way to eat Unique pretzels is to substitute them for a spoon when eating ice cream - the salt and sweet, and also the crunchiness go so well together.

They're called "Splits" because of the unique process by which they're made: when they rise in the oven the surface actually splits open, yielding more crunchy surface area. Considering the recipe and company have been in the same family for over 100 years, you can bet they know a thing or two about pretzels!

We carry two varieties: original and extra-dark. The Original are the Platonic Pretzel ideal—perfectly crunchy, perfectly salty, just the right size and shape. The Extra-Dark are for those who—like me—adore the flavor of char on just about anything! If you like your toast, pop tarts and french fries extra-done, you will love these. Think of them as gilding the lily—with char!
