What is so great about WFM's coffee? Patrick's blog...

I must admit I was never fanatical about coffee before I started this business. My Mom was always the coffee-holic in the family. She was and still is very particular about coffee. She always, I mean always, has to brew her coffee strong. In her world, no one else can brew it like her. Not even the Market. So when we first started the Market and Mom would work the early shift, she would always bring a little thermos of her coffee. From Zabars. I couldn't believe it. No cream, no sugar, no nothing. I don't know how such a small-framed woman drank such a big coffee. The stuff was like espresso. Then again, she used to run circles around even the youngest of our staff.

Mind you, Dad was no coffee slouch—he loved his coffee too—and he taught me what is the now-famous Farmers' Market mantra…sell fresh, full bodied coffee beans and brew it strong—unlike most of the other stores in our area at the time. Now today, many folks, both at home and in coffee shops brew stronger coffee thanks to the folks at Green Mountain and Starbucks. And we're actually thankful to the big boys for spreading the gospel of great coffee.

But we've always thought our coffee much, much better than the big guys. And here's why.

For 14 years we have used what we think is the best little roaster in all of New England to roast coffee especially for us. Throughout all the years, owner Ron Greenberg and master roaster Dan Vashon have consistently roasted our coffee to perfection. Their business model was always to have tight relationships with local fresh food markets and to roast only to order. And that fit our vision too. Ron knows the coffee markets: he has his ear to the coffee world and purchases beans from only the best small estates all over the world. Often organic or fair trade, Ron is extremely picky about the estates from which he purchases beans. Combine Dan's incredible roasting skill—dark, light, city, full city, French, Turkish—Dan is the quintessential artist and his brush is the roaster. I don't mean to wax poetic here but it's the honest truth. He gets so excited and precise talking coffee I can barely keep up when I ask him about what's new or if I ask him about the roast on a particular coffee we carry. It's absolutely wild.

It's no secret: Dan and Ron are why we rightfully boast to have some of the best coffee in the Upper Valley. And guess who is a complete convert now? That's right…Mama Crowl. You'll often find her parked over in the coffee aisle talking up how great our coffee is. And she still brings her thermos into work. Except now it's filled with WFM brew.

And it should come as no surprise when Eddie, the Deli Lama, is firing up the 'ol brewer at 7:30 AM every morning that there are often lines to get into our little coffee nook. We continue—like we did 14 years ago—to brew it strong and fresh. As our slogan says "Market coffee makes you smooth and happy."
